The Danube station is situated on the right bank by the Technical University and opposite the new 'art quarter' featuring the Ludwig Museum and the new opera house that is spectacularly illuminated at night. The excellent connections to the motorway in the direction of the airport make the Danube station particularly attractive for getting guests to and from the ships.

Local area

Budapest is a major city on the Danube with plenty of flair and is one of the most attractive cities in the world. There are numerous quarters protected by world cultural heritage legislation: The sweeping view along the banks of the river, the castle quarter in Buda, Andrássy Street, Heroes' Square and the Millennium underground railway are all places under international protection in Budapest. Margaret Island is a wonderful municipal park on an island in the middle of the Danube providing another highlight for Budapest's visitors and residents alike.

Some of the most important sights can be found on the banks of the Danube, such as the parliament building, the National Theatre and the Palace of the Arts.

The tectonic location of the city explains why Budapest has almost 100 healing thermal springs, and also how it acquired the reputation of being Europe's largest spa city. 1600 years ago the Romans were already aware of the benefits of these subterranean treasures. The numerous natural sources of thermal water enable Budapest to offer a wide range of thermal baths, aquaparks, indoor swimming pools and spa hotels.

The establishment of the Habsburg Austro-Hungarian monarchy in 1867 enabled these two powers, Austria and Hungary, to mingle culturally, economically and intellectually. The charm exuded during this cultural renaissance helped Budapest to become the summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Empress Elisabeth (Sissi).
